Campo dei Fiori & Trastevere district

Campo dei Fiori and the Jewish Quarter, with its narrow alleys and many sights, can be easily explored on foot. Shopping streets, museums, bars, and restaurants invite you to linger. A stone's throw across the Tiber, at Tiberina Island, or at the Ponte Sisto pedestrian bridge, and you're in the Trastevere district. Trastevere is a picturesque, lively, and multicultural neighborhood. The rough and tumble charm of this area has captured the hearts of many. It achieved cult status through various films by Vittorio de Sica, Fellini, and Woody Allen. The Trastevere district is considered a shopper's paradise, with unique specialty shops and fashion boutiques, especially between Piazza Trilussa and Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere.

1. Campo dei Fiori

Campo dei Fiori is a square in the center of Rome, near Piazza Navona. In the center of the square stands a statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, erected in 1889, who was burned there as a heretic on February 17, 1600. Campo dei Fiori literally means "field of flowers," a name that dates back to the Middle Ages, when the area was still a meadow of flowers. Due to the daily market of flowers, fruit, herbs, and vegetables, the square is very lively and colorful in the mornings. 2. Palazzo Spada & Museo Baracco

Palazzo Spada - The Palazzo Spada (16th century) is one of the great city palaces in Rome. It is located on Piazza Capo di Ferro, very close to Piazza Campo dei Fiori. The Renaissance building subsequently became the property of Bernardino Spada, whose name it still bears today. He commissioned Francesco Borromini to restore the facades. Fontana delle Tartarughe - Walking from Campo dei Fiori toward the Jewish Quarter, you will reach the charming Fontana delle Tartarughe (Turtle Fountain). The Mattei family had this fountain built in the 16th century to enhance Piazza Mattei. Giacomo della Porta designed the fountain, which owes its charm to Landini's four slender bronze youths resting their feet on the head of a dolphin. 4. Trastevere & Gianicolo

Trastevere - The Ponte Sisto pedestrian bridge connects the center of Rome with the Trastevere district. It is a lively district with many beautiful alleys, houses, and churches. 5. Palazzo Corsini & Villa Farnesina

Palazzo Corsini and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica - Located in the Trastevere district is the Palazzo Corsini, built in the 16th century. It hosted, among many other guests, Bramante, Michelangelo, Erasmus of Rotterdam, and Queen Christina of Sweden. Today, the palace houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica (also called the Galleria Corsini), with paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Murillo, Caravaggio, and Guido Reni. The collection focuses on 17th and 18th-century Italian painting. Villa Farnesina - Located right next to the Palazzo Corsini is the Villa Farnesina. 6. Santa Maria in Trastevere & Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

Santa Maria in Trastevere - In the center of the Trastevere district lies the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. The octagonal fountain from the 17th century was designed by Carlo Fontana. The church of Santa Maria in Trastevere is believed to be the first Christian religious building in Rome (3rd century). The current building, dating from the 12th century, owes its fame primarily to the mosaics by Pietro Cavallini. The 22 granite columns of the nave came from the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. Despite some Baroque additions in the 18th century, the basilica has retained its medieval character. Among the works worth seeing are the facade mosaic and the Cavallini mosaic.
