Toscolano-Maderno

The village offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Several beautiful, expansive beaches and numerous hiking opportunities are located in the large Alto Garda Bresciano Nature Park, which stretches from Salò to Limone (50 km). Several campsites are located along the lake, and the village offers good shopping and several excellent restaurants. A hike into the Toscolano Valley and a visit to the Paper Museum are highly recommended. Another hiking trail leads up to Gaino, with beautiful views of the lake. From Maderno, boats travel across the entire lake, and a car ferry connects Maderno to Torri on the other side.

1. Sights

The Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo is located in the village center of Maderno. This Romanesque-Lombard church building in the center of Maderno immediately stands out from the modern buildings surrounding it. The beautifully designed façade alone testifies to the outstanding stonemasonry of the 12th century. The beautifully crafted capitals of the columns inside the church, as well as the late Gothic frescoes and the crypt, are worth seeing. The church also houses a valuable painting by Paolo Veneziano, depicting a Madonna con Bambino (Virgin and Child). The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Toscolano, by the lake. The interior of the church is a veritable gallery of paintings by the famous Venetian painter Andrea Celesti. Right next to the church is the Roman villa of the Nonii Arrii, one of the most important residential buildings of the Roman period. However, not much of this once impressive villa remains. Port of Toscolano Surrounded by old palaces formerly inhabited by wealthy, noble families, lies the charming little harbor. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, it was an important transport port for goods bound for Venice. On the Brescia side of Lake Garda, you can visit the beautiful towns of Gargnano, Toscolano-Maderno, Gardone, and Salò. This hike leads from the village center of Toscolano along footpaths up to Pulciano, then continues to the church of Gaino, which boasts a beautiful viewpoint. The small village of Gaino is idyllically situated on a high plateau above Toscolano-Maderno and can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes on a beautiful hiking trail. This secluded village is the perfect destination for those seeking peace and quiet who want to escape the hustle and bustle of mass tourism during their vacation. Due to its location, Gaino promises beautiful views of the lake and is considered a mecca for hikers. Beautiful hiking trails invite you to observe the flora and fauna. From here, you can start hikes up Monte Castello or Monte Pizzoccolo. The parish church of Gaino, situated majestically above the village, is worth seeing, offering stunning views of the lake and the Lake Garda island of Isola del Garda. Excursion to the Toscolano Valley. This hike begins in the village center of Toscolano, near the bridge. It leads along the Toscolano River through the narrow, romantic valley. You can do it on foot or by bike. A romantic stroll through the protected valley, with many ancient, dilapidated ruins of former paper mills. In the valley, near the Paper Mill Museum, a hiking trail leads up to Gaino (beautiful view over the lake), from where you can hike back down to Toscolano (possibly stopping at the excellent ice cream parlor in Pulciano) (circular hike, takes 1 to 2 hours). Hiking to Monte Castello (900 meters above sea level). From Toscolano, you first hike up to Gaino on small footpaths, but you can also reach Gaino in a short time by car. From Gaino, you can climb this mountain with a fairly long but beautiful hike. You first have to hike along the lake towards Gargnano, as the direct ascent from the lake side is too steep. Once you reach the north side of Monte Castello (near Navazzo), you climb through the forest to the summit. Occasionally, you have to climb the ropes during the final section. The beautiful view of the lake rewards the hiker. Those who want to reach the summit of Monte Castello more quickly can drive up the mountain via Gargnano to Navazzo. From there, the hike to the summit is much shorter than if you choose Toscolano-Maderno as your starting point. Hike to Monte Pizzocolo (1,500 meters above sea level), with beautiful views over the entire lake and the Alps. Drive up the mountain to the left or right of the mountain, up to about 1,000 meters above sea level. Park your car and then walk up to the Rifugio Pirlo allo Spino mountain hut, and then continue to the summit of Monte Pizzocolo (from the parking lot at about 1,000 meters above sea level, it's about a 2.5-hour walk).
