Via Veneto begins at Piazza Barberini, where bars and meeting places for Roman high society were located in the 1950s. Museum in the Palazzo Barberini - Near Piazza Barberini lies the Palazzo Barberini. It houses part of the important art museum, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. The entrance to the museum is via Quattro Fontane. Carlo Maderno was the initial architect, but after his death, Gian Lorenzo Bernini took over construction management. 3. Santa Maria della Vittoria & Moses Fountain
The Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria appears inconspicuous from the outside, but reveals itself as an impressive church on the inside. In the Cornaro Chapel, one can find one of Bernini's most beautiful statues, the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, executed in 1646. The figures are characterized by tremendous dynamism. The ingenious use of lighting perfectly captures the moment of ecstasy. The staging of the Cornaro Chapel is equally impressive. Members of the Venetian Doge family are, as it were, onlookers of this vision. The church is located near Piazza Barberini. Right next to the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria is the fountain Fontana dell'Acqua Felice, also called Fontana di Mose (Fountain of Moses). The fountain was built in the 16th century according to a design by Domenico Fontana during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus V. The fountain is located at the end of the Acqua Felice aqueduct. In the central niche, the large statue of Moses, never truly appreciated by critics, points to the miraculous water springing from the rock.
4. Santa Maria degli Angeli & Museo Nazionale Romano
Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli – Walking from the Fountain of Moses towards the train station (Roma Termini), you will reach the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, located on Piazza della Repubblica. Construction of the church began in 1560 under Michelangelo's direction. It was built on the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian. Museo Nazionale Romano, in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, near Roma Termini station – this is one of the locations of the must-see Roman National Museum. Other museum locations include the Palazzo Altemps near Piazza Navona and the Crypta Balbi near Piazza Venezia (ticket is valid for all three museums).
5. Quirinale & Scuderie al Quirinale
Just south of the Trevi Fountain lies the Quirinal Hill (with the Piazza del Quirinale), one of Rome's Seven Hills. The palazzo that now adorns the hill was built in the 16th century by the architects Bernini, Madama, and Fontana. The Palazzo del Quirinale was the official residence of the Italian monarch. Today, the President of the Republic resides here. From the square in front of the palace, with the statue of Castor and Pollux in the center, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Rome. Museum Scuderie del Quirinale - Right next to the Palazzo del Quirinale, the government palace, which can usually be visited on Sunday mornings, is the Museum Scuderie del Quirinale. Interesting special exhibitions are regularly held here. Link: https://www.scuderiequirinale.it/ - Information about the Museum Scuderie del Quirinale, also in English. Sant' Andrea al Quirinale - Located in the immediate vicinity of Piazza del Quirinale is the church of Sant' Andrea al Quirinale, considered a gem of Baroque architecture due to its rose-colored marble interior. It was based on Bernini's plans and built for the Jesuit order in the 17th century.
6. San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane
San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane - Not far from the Piazza del Quirinale is the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, at the intersection of the four fountains. The church, built by Borromini in the 17th century, is so small that it is also called San Carlino. It is a monument to Borromini. The oval dome and the façade are particularly masterful. It consists of four individual marble fountains located at the corners of the intersection of two streets on the summit of the Quirinal Hill. The Four Fountains were built by Domenico Fontana and Pietro da Cortona on behalf of the Pope. Four deities were chosen as the fountain figures, all depicted reclining on the ground.
